A mile with a difference

The participants in the inaugural Crosbie Crew Beer Mile might argue that this should be the lead article in the newsletter and some clearly believe that it’s far more important than Melbourne Marathon or even the World Championships. Not mentioning any names Claire Thomas! The crew descended on Fawkner Park en masse late on a Friday afternoon for an event that looks like it will become a permanent feature on the Crosbie Crew calendar. The format is pretty simple – drink a can of 355ml full strength beer, run a 400m lap, then do that three more times. It doesn’t sound particularly hard, but the fancy dress requirement added to the challenge and the fun. The Crosbie Crew talent in the race varied greatly – from those who could drink like a fish but whose running needs some work, to many of our talented runners who have questionable drinking capability. I could include a range of dishonourable mentions and vomit stories, but I’ll spare some blushes and focus on the champions. The winners were Claire Thomas, who took out the women’s event in 8 minutes 46 seconds, and her husband James Goodlet, who won the men’s race in 7 minutes 10 seconds. A new spin on the term ‘power couple’ if ever there was one!
